Yarn per skein (yd, from the label)
Optional: to count skeins.
You need about
2,840 yd (2,590 m)
Likely range
2,410 yd – 3,400 yd
Size used
50 × 60 in (127 × 152 cm), 3,000 sq in
Assumes
4 Medium, single crochet, 0.945 yd per sq in
Estimates only: your stitch, hook and tension change the numbers. Work a gauge swatch, and buy yarn from one dye lot.
How it works
Pick what you are making and its size, the yarn weight on the label (1 Super Fine to 7 Jumbo) and your main stitch. The calculator multiplies the fabric area by a typical yardage per square inch for that yarn and stitch and gives an estimate with a range, plus the number of skeins to buy.
Example: a 50 × 60 in throw is 3,000 sq in. In worsted (weight 4) single crochet that is about 0.95 yd per sq in, so about 2,840 yd, likely between 2,410 and 3,400 yd. With 200-yard skeins, 18 skeins cover the high end.
For an exact number, use your swatch: a 6 × 6 in swatch that weighs 9 g means a 3,000 sq in throw weighs about 750 g. With 100 g = 200 yd skeins that is 1,500 yd, or 8 skeins.
Frequently asked questions
How much yarn do I need for a throw blanket?
A 50 × 60 in throw in worsted yarn takes about 2,840 yd in single crochet (2,410–3,400 yd), about 2,270 yd in double crochet and about 2,210 yd knit in stockinette. Bulky yarn takes fewer yards.
Why does single crochet use more yarn than double crochet?
Short stitches pack more yarn into each square inch. Single crochet makes a dense fabric; taller stitches like double crochet cover more area with each yard.
How do I work out yarn from a swatch?
Weigh your swatch, divide the project area by the swatch area, and multiply by the swatch weight. Then turn grams into yards with the skein label (for example 100 g = 200 yd).
Should I buy an extra skein?
Buy enough for the high end of the range, all from the same dye lot: skeins from a later lot can be a slightly different color.
