The yarn weight numbers 0–7: what each is called, its gauge, hook and needle sizes, and wraps per inch.
How it works
The Craft Yarn Council numbers yarn from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo). The number is printed on most US yarn labels as a little skein symbol.
Each weight comes with a typical gauge and tool size: medium (4, worsted) knits 16–20 stitches per 4 in on 4.5–5.5 mm needles and crochets 11–14 single crochets per 4 in on a 5.5–6.5 mm hook.
Wraps per inch (WPI) helps with unlabeled yarn: wrap it around a ruler without stretching and count the wraps in one inch.
Frequently asked questions
What is weight 4 yarn?
Medium: worsted, afghan or aran yarn. Knit gauge 16–20 stitches and crochet gauge 11–14 single crochets per 4 in.
Is DK the same as weight 3?
Yes: weight 3 (light) covers DK and light worsted yarn.
Can I swap one yarn weight for another?
Only with a new gauge swatch: a different weight changes the size of every stitch, and the yardage you need.
